US banks add $75 billion of CRE as concentration risks recede

US banks expanded their commercial real estate (CRE) portfolios by 3% in the first quarter, the fastest rate of growth in the asset in nearly three years.

Across 4,336 US banks, total CRE exposure stood at $2.61 trillion as of March 31, up $74.9 billion from three months earlier. It was the largest proportional increase since Q2 2023, and the biggest rise in absolute terms since Q2 2022.
