Suzy Welch Sells Upper East Side Townhouse for $23M

Suzy Welch has completed her push to downsize on the Upper East Side. 

The author and widow of former General Electric CEO Jack Welch sold her Upper East Side townhouse at 160 East 81st Street for $23 million, property records show. Welch had listed the home in November with Corcoran’s Deborah Grubman for $26 million. 

The sale comes roughly half a year after Welch closed on a condo on Park Avenue for $24.2 million. An avowed Upper East Sider, Welch told Robb Report when she decided to list the townhouse last year that she was looking to downsize elsewhere in the neighborhood. 

The 40-foot-wide townhouse spanned over 7,600 square feet across four stories. She bought the home, which comes with seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms, for nearly $23 million in 2021 and had it redesigned by Williams Lawrence. 

The home has a 40-by-48-foot private garden in the back, a private garage and a wood-paneled library. The top floor is set up as a private three-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen. 

Welch’s new condo is not all that much smaller, spanning 7,200 square feet across three stories. The condo comes with a home theater and a top-floor landscaped terrace. The second floor has two terraces, along with a primary suite and a sauna.  

Perched atop an 11-unit pre-war building that was converted to condos following a 2006 renovation, the apartment is accessed by a private elevator. 

Welch bought the condo from billionaire hedge funder Joseph Edelman, who purchased the home for $30.5 million in 2008. 

Since her husband’s death in 2020, Welch has been actively rearranging the family’s property portfolio. 

In 2022, she sold her Lenox Hill co-op at 834 Park Avenue for $21 million after buying it with her husband, Jack, for about $19 million in 2018. That year, she also listed her Hudson Valley estate for $25 million. 

Welch began her career as a reporter. After marrying Jack Welch in 2004, she co-authored a number of books with him on business and professional development. In 2023, she was appointed to the faculty of the NYU Stern School of Business.
