Meta Muse Image AI generator raises Instagram scraping, consent, and privacy concerns

Meta has launched Muse Image, an AI image generator from Meta Superintelligence Labs. Critics and users raise concerns that the tool can pull photos from public Instagram accounts via prompt tags, with opt-in enabled by default. Experts cite consent, data privacy, image-scraping, and deepfake risks, despite watermark safeguards and Meta’s stated user controls.

Meta has introduced Muse Image, a new AI image generator built by Meta Superintelligence Labs. The rollout has triggered criticism about privacy and consent. Users and experts have raised concerns about a prompt feature. The tool can pull from public Instagram photos. Critics say this could enable unwanted likeness use in AI images.

Muse Image is described by Meta as its most advanced image model so far. Meta said it can follow instructions closely and edit images with accuracy. Meta also said it can combine several references and use Instagram for social context. The company added that Muse Image brings agentic tool use and works with Muse Spark.

Muse Image and public Instagram account tagging concerns

Some worry centres on prompts that include an Instagram username. Observers say this can “claw\” photos from public accounts. Experts say the setting is enabled by default for public profiles. That raises questions about consent and image-scraping. People could see AI images that resemble them, without any direct permission.

Prachir Singh, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, said the tool can create fake pictures from public photos. Singh said users may not realise they are included by default. \”This is a big change because it changes what having a public Instagram account means. It used to simply mean more people could see someones posts. Now it also means strangers can use that persons face to create new images they never agreed to – a risk thats especially significant for influencers and creators who rely on public accounts for their work, but also for everyday users, since Meta has said it wont notify people when this happens to them, Singh said.\”

Singh also warned about legal and safety risks tied to generated images. Singh said advertisers could face liability if an AI image includes someone’s face. \”Legally, if a business uses one of these AI-generated images in an ad and it accidentally includes someones face, that business and not Meta is likely to face lawsuits or backlash, he further said.\” Singh also cautioned about online impersonation and harassment risks.

Muse Image settings, opt-out controls, and privacy questions

Meta said people can control tagging of their content for AI creation. Meta said there is a simple option to switch the feature off. Instagram Settings were updated to explain reuse controls. Meta said reuse settings cover features like remix. Meta said these features also let people create using AI products at Meta.

Meta said users can opt out by toggling off the reuse setting. Critics argue opt-out systems can reduce informed consent. They say many users may never change default settings. Experts also noted that public account holders may not expect their posts to become AI inputs. They also flagged the lack of alerts when a likeness gets used.

Muse Image deepfake risk and trust in AI-generated images

Industry watchers said broad access could normalise quick deepfakes. They said it may become harder to judge if an image is real. This could increase vulnerability to impersonation online. The concern extends beyond creators to ordinary users. Meta has announced watermark safeguards, but critics say trust issues may still grow.

Meta said Muse Image adds a content seal, using invisible watermarking. Meta said this helps verify if an image was AI-made. Images from the Meta AI app and meta.ai carry a hidden provenance signal. Meta said it remains after cropping or resizing. Meta said the same seal will extend to video soon.

Meta said it is also previewing a detection tool for the seal. The company said it will let people check if an image carries the Content Seal watermark. Meta said this offers an early way to understand if content was made with Meta AI. Critics said detection still depends on awareness and consistent platform support.

Muse Image availability, Meta AI app rollout, and Muse Video plans

Meta announced access across the Meta AI app and on meta.ai. It is also available on Instagram Stories in the US. Meta said WhatsApp access is limited to some countries. The company said it is coming soon to Facebook. Meta also said Muse Video is coming soon to creators and Meta AI.

Meta described examples of what Muse Image can do. Meta said it can restore an image and remove fog. Meta said it can reveal a valley below after edits. Meta also cited \”whimsical\” prompts. One example was changing flower petals into a rainbow gradient. Meta said the model changes exactly what users request.

Prabhu Ram, Vice President – Industry Research Group at CyberMedia Research CMR, said the change affects what public profiles mean. Ram said visibility now includes being source material for AI images. \”That shifts the risk from simply being seen online to being repurposed without clear consent or control. The fact that this is enabled by default makes it more problematic, because opt-out models typically benefit from user inertia rather than informed user choice, he said.\”

Ram said creators face higher risks because identity links to earnings. Ram warned about fake endorsements and reputational harm. Ram said brand dilution may follow, with legal and financial impact. Ram also said liability may broaden if platform design enables misuse. Ram added users may share less publicly over time.

The launch places focus on how social posts get reused in AI tools. Meta has pointed to opt-out controls and watermark checks. Analysts have stressed default settings and consent gaps. The debate now includes trust in images and responsibility for misuse. Meta’s rollout schedule continues as Muse Image expands to more services.
