Indane Gas, HP Gas, Bharat Gas Cylinder New Rules: 7 Major Transfer, Refilling, Booking, LPG-PNG Switch Rules To Know

Gas Cylinder New Rules: Indian households using both LPG cylinders and PNG connections should ensure that they are aware of the latest rules, which are important for refilling, transfer of connections, bookings and much more. Since the US-Israel-Iran war in late February, the government has modified existing and introduced new rules for LPG and PNG cooking gas for Indians to tackle the supply shortage crisis. With the easing in the West Asian war and sharp decline in crude oil prices, the Oil Ministry has likely directed oil marketing companies to reduce the production of LPGs.

1. Changing Address? You Are Required To Inform Your LPG Distributor

If a customer is relocating to different location, they are required to inform their existing LPG distributor either be Indane, HP Gas or BharatGas. You will be required to submit application and documents for transfer of your LPG connections.

Documents such as identity proof; new residential address; original connection or subscription voucher; consumer card or gas book and any other important documents for the transfer.

2. Notify Whether New Address Is In Same Area For Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, HP Gas Connections:

The process of LPG transfer becomes more flexible and easy if the new residential location falls in the same area category of your existing LPG distributor. Because then you probably would not need to fill an application of transfer. In majority cases, the LPG distributor just updates the new residential address in their records. And once the update is completed, you can continue for refilling and LPG deliveries at your new location without the requirement of new LPG connection.

It is important that you verify that your address has been updated successfully with the LPG distributor before applying for LPG refills.

3. Transfer Voucher If You Are Moving Within The City

The rules for transfer vouchers vary depending upon the location. However, you must ensure to have all the necessary documents and proofs for a successful transfer. Here is a step-by-step guide as per HPCL. The procedures are somewhat the same for Indane Gas and Bharat Gas as well.

If You Are Moving Within The City:

Step 1: If you are changing locations in the same city, then your distributor will issue e-Customer Transfer Advise (e-CTA) ie. Authorization Code on production of Subscription Voucher (SV).

Step 2: Take your e-CTA along with necessary proofs to the new gas distributor near your new residency.

Step 3: The SV with the Authorisation Code should be produced to the new distributor, who will enroll the customer & return the original SV after endorsement. The SV is an important document and should be retained safely.

Step 4: However, here, the equipment (cylinder + regulator) need not be surrendered, but be carried by the customer.

4. Transfer Voucher: If You Are Moving To Another City

Step 1: In this case, the distributor of your current location will issue Termination Voucher (TV) and will refund the deposit amount mentioned in the SV, on surrender of existing equipment (cylinder/s and regulator). Amount paid as Permanent Advance under PAHAL Scheme, if any, will be adjusted on refund of deposit amount in such cases.

Step 2: Do not surrender your Domestic Gas Consumer Card. The same card can be used at the new location after endorsement by the new distributor.

Step 3: Reconnection can be availed at the new place by payment of the same deposit amount mentioned in the TV. Please collect the new SV and retain it safely.

Among the identity proofs, key documents will be Aadhaar card, Passport, Driving Licence, PAN card or Voter ID Card.

Further, in case of address proof, you will be required to submit either Aadhaar card with the new address updated, utility bills, rent agreement or lease agreement, passport, bank statement and house registration document.

5. Get New Consumer Number After Transfer

After getting the transfer voucher or transfer subscription voucher, get a new connection with in the new residential area that is outside your city. Once the process is completed, you will get a new consumer number. Once your new LPG account is activated, you can begin booking LPG cylinders or refilling using the new number at your new address,

6. If Switching To PNG, Ensure All Steps Are Followed

Since West Asia war, the government and OMCs have promoted to switch to piped natural gas (PNG) connection as it is more affordable, reliable and less risky. Also, this reduces the burden on LPG allocations.

As per the latest data, in the past six months. over 13.40 lakh customers have availed new PNG connections across the country. This represents about 20% of government’s target of 60 new PNG connections at Indian households.

However, to get a PNG connection first you need to meet the eligibility criteria. The first and foremost is to check whether your society or area has PNG infrastructure, because this is the biggest priority. If they do, you can easily apply for new PNG connection at Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL website or visit the LPG distributor for switching to PNG. You will be required to pay connection charges if required, along with surrender your LPG connection and submit necessary documents for new PNG connections.

For PNG, you will be required to submit documents like transfer and subscription vouchers of LPG, consumer records, security deposit receipts, address update details, and other identity proofs like Aadhaar card, Passport, electricity bill or driving license or PAN card and voter id.

7. Cut Indane Gas, HP Gas, Bharat Gas Connection Within 30 Days

In May, the government revised its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026. The amendment aims to provide additional relaxation and convenience to domestic LPG consumers who subsequently obtain Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections.

Under the new rule, the moment you obtain PNG connections, you will have 30 days’ time to terminate your LPG connections.

Since customers are asked to terminate their LPG connection within 30 days of getting PNG, the government has announced a provision that allows these customers to restore their LPG connection. The government has directed citizens to obtain a transfer voucher when moving to non-PNG areas.
