Chiefs’ Coach Eric Bieniemy’s Wife Mia Is Shot at Couple’s Virginia Home
The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been shot at the couple’s Virginia home while her husband was attending one of the team’s training camps in Missouri—with police confirming that the couple’s son has been taken into custody.
Sources told ESPN that Mia Bieniemy, 57, was taken to hospital after the incident—while police officials in Loudoun County confirmed that a person involved in a shooting was being treated for “serious injuries,” but declined to reveal their identity.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in an official statement that officers had arrived at a property on the block where Bieniemy and his spouse reside in Ashburn, VA, at around 7:32 p.m. ET on July 26.
“At approximately 7:32 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a shooting,” the statement began. “Deputies located one adult female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The sheriff’s department noted that the Bieneimys’ son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, has been arrested and charged with Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Inside of a Dwelling. He was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
“The investigation is ongoing, and there is not believed to be any threat to the public,” the statement continued, while asking “anyone with any additional information” to contact the sheriff’s office.
Bieniemy, 56, who is originally from New Orleans, LA, only signed his latest contract with the Chiefs in January 2026, having previously spent a year with the Chicago Bears. However, he previously enjoyed a lengthy 10-year stint with the Kansas City team between 2013 and 2022, during which time he helped them to win two Super Bowls.
The offensive coordinator was with the Chiefs at the second practice of their 2026 training camp at Missouri Western State when the incident occurred.
A spokesperson for the Chiefs told ESPN that the team was “aware of an incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” but shared no other details.
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” the statement said. “Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office warned Ashburn residents to “avoid the area” surrounding the couple’s home in a Facebook post shared after the incident, however police have not yet released any other information about the investigation.
The football coach and his wife appear to have purchased their Virginia property to serve as their home base after Bieniemy signed a two-year contract with the Washington Commanders in February 2023, with records showing that they snapped up the home a few months later for $1.8 million.
It’s unclear where Bieniemy has been staying since rejoining the Chiefs earlier this year, however records show that the family does own a property in Kansas, around a 30-minute drive from the team’s home stadium.
Bieniemy and his spouse, who share two sons, wed in the 1990s, when he was still pursuing his own career as a player in the NFL, before pivoting to coaching in 2000, beginning with a role at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, CO.
He then spent time working as the running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings, before heading to the University of Colorado, where he served as the offensive coordinator.
However, Bieniemy is perhaps best known for his work with the Chiefs—a team that welcomed his return with open arms.
In a recent interview with USA Today, the coach made clear that he feels the same way about the team, telling the outlet that he felt it almost impossible to turn down the offer from Chiefs head coach Andy Reid when he called to offer him his offensive coordinator role back.
“It was hard to pass up when the head man picks up the phone and says, ‘B, let’s get this thing going,'” he shared.
Speaking to the outlet, Reid was full of praise for Bieniemy, describing him as “one of the more phenomenal guys” he has worked with, adding: “He’s cranking, worked his tail off. Appreciate that. Doesn’t let anything slide by.”
As soon as news of Bieniemy’s return to the Chiefs was announced, speculation began swirling that he was being primed to take over the head coach position at some point in the future—a role that has thus far eluded him, despite his impressive career.
